As time gently grabs my hand and guides me across the years of life, I am finding myself becoming more appreciative of sharing in the unique customs of others and the value that such adds to being open to new experiences.
Recently I had the opportunity to participate in an event that had never been on my mind to attend nor was it the thing I was most interested in doing: afternoon tea. You see, I did not know much about what happened at an afternoon tea. It simply was something about which I was completely unfamiliar. Yet, because of the generosity of another individual, I was exposed to a remarkable experience that broadened my worldview and exposed me to a different reality I soon will not forget.
There were those in the room whose family legacies – and bank accounts, no doubt – stretched back decades – if not centuries; some of who wore high-end everything. The afternoon tea was their normal routine of which my companions and I soaked in with awe and splendor.
The highest level of customer service permeated the room. The food – scrumptious; the tea – plentiful; the environment – luxurious; and the music – relaxing. We were never made to feel as though we did not belong. As we were leaving, a gentleman offered to take our picture for us as his wife chided in the background, “Make sure he took a picture of you and not of himself!” They appeared to be individuals with the family legacies mentioned earlier.
A few preconceived notions that I had regarding upscale environments and the wealthy were debunked that day. The afternoon tea turned out to be one of the top highlights of my week and has inspired me to continue to be open to new experiences. I am hoping life continues to debunk my preconceived notions so that I may relish in the most life has to offer.
